To waste emotional noise, as if it’s always by choice, sits so heavy. We go from one to the next, and speak while holding our breath, still repeating: Could wake, could turn the light off and neatly say, 'until we wake' Could go, or sit in the shadows just to stay afloat until we wake The steps we take are unknown, and yet we want to feel home all around us Now, a day to count and to keep has gone to rest at our feet, until we wake

Beyond the material, vision won’t reveal Direct, the non-optical filters into my blood Absorb, unintentional, disguised as the cure Destroyed all that’s rational, replaced it with doubt A vast multiplicity contained deep within The change, hardly visible, and still it suffocates me The way it accumulates, with a word to the ground A state almost normalized, yet it’s hard to ignore

The Turning 06:10
Out of mind, what to reveal or confide Resting patiently in and out of sight Living proof, waiting to look through the glass Letting consequence pull it all undone To wake To feel, To watch As I turn the corner, the turning Corner the turning, the corner Turn the corner the turning All this time, all this time Finding ways to deny Not enough, it’s unsafe And inside, it’s a blur Don’t know where to I’ve gone Take care, take some Back and forth, I’ve been retracing my steps Through familiar thoughts slowly taking shape

With each phrase, so short We’ve worn away the way back The way back And how to explain Reaching and steady Reaching and steady Reaching and steady the fragile balance We lose and regain And I’m gone And I’m here And I’m gone And I’m here looking out and around And sometimes I can’t Find you Find you Find you But, what remains is enough And standing with unfolded arms I’ll reassemble what I can Piece by piece

To Be 04:35
To be a cage, overflowing A broken arm, a rusted knife To be one thin strand among others in a web, A split surface, a drifting gaze To be liquid, a floating vowel, A vacant room slowly gathering smoke, Leaking light and movement To be vines stretching out along the wall, An ironed crease, a purple hue A shadow, behind and underneath it all To be dusk, comfortably, uncomfortably in between A winded bridge, a shaking pulse To be doubt, leaving behind atrophied potential The asphalt and the cicadas underneath To be a long thread, bunched and knotted Entangled limbs, a firm grasp To be full-throated, un-constricted comfort Fleeting and rare To be what you hoped for, Fitting in boxes, abiding by rules Flanked by expectations, Mine and yours and theirs To be ever-changing, Cutting and ripping and tearing at the seams, a violent growth Reinventing and mourning what's left behind Undoing the damage Standing and falling, knocking it all over Again and again and again and again To be everything, and to be nothing And to be

about

For Now is a Boston-based quintet led by vocalist/composer Isabel Crespo that performs compositions influenced by modern jazz, contemporary classical music, visual art, and poetry. For Now’s new release continues the exploration of the personal and the political in a subtle way. The songs invite the listener to lean in, peel back the layers, and take a closer look at what we often take for granted.

Sonically, the album reimagines form, making use of dynamic orchestration within the quintet, and incorporating contrapuntal sections along with open and exploratory improvisations. The Turning reflects on themes such as the (de)construction of self, the importance of recognizing intersectionality, and the constant pursuit of inspiration.

In addition to the album, Crespo created a zine to visually accompany the music. It includes lyrics from the album, quotes from works that inspired Crespo during the writing process, collages, and more. The Turning is available on all digital platforms, and physical CDs packaged within the zine. The multimedia aspect of For Now’s release provides additional insight and a tactile representation of the music, giving the listener different ways of interacting with the material.
